On Tuesday Mr Schultz and Mrs Valentine had the opportunity to go to a workshop at the City Gallery that focused on how to use artist models in the classroom. They went to the course with an open mind and some anxiety as well. With an open mind and demonstrating untapped skill Mr Schultz and Mrs Valentine managed to learn various painting techniques such as layering using textures and how to paint interesting New Zealand birds. The pieces of art constructed Mr Schultz and Mrs Valentine were influenced by well-known NZ artists Shane Cotton and April Shin. Mrs Valentine and Mr Schultz both had a rewarding day filled with laughter and absolute concentration. They are looking forward to bringing the knowledge they have gained to the classroom to share with the wonderful students of Room 7 and 11.
On Monday Miss Kearns and Miss Pearson had the opportunity to go to a drawing course at the City Gallery. They were both a bit nervous about going as they didn't think their art skills would be up to scratch. In the end that didn't matter as they learnt lots of different drawing techniques, such as blind drawing, upside down drawing, still life drawing and using charcoal which they can bring back to the classroom to share with their students.
Miss Kearns and Miss Pearson both had a great day and can't wait to try out some of their new skills with the students in Rooms 12 and 13. Can you guess which teacher did which picture? On Tuesday 11th March, Hannah Dorey, Laurelei Bautista and Sarah Downs attended ‘Speed Date an Author’ which was an extension writing programme which gave young writers the opportunity to meet six talented authors and illustrators. These authors helped us expand our knowledge in writing and illustrating. When we arrived in Lower Hutt we met these following authors and illustrators: · Anna Mackenzie (author) · Bob Kerr (illustrator) · Ruth Paul (author and illustrator) · Ulf Stark (Swedish author) · Marty Smith (poet) · Sarah Laing (author and cartoon illustrator) We had a great time, learnt many new skills, and came back with two new books for our library; Beige by Cecil Castellucci, and Granny by Anthony Horowitz – Feel free to check them out! By Sarah, Hannah and Laurelei On Wednesday 12 March, the Year 4-8 students participated in our School Athletic Sports at Nairnville Park. Five events were held, sprints, high jump, vortex, quoits and long jump. We could hear many people cheering for their classmates and celebrating their achievements. This time definitely showed the importance of practising prior to the event and putting in 100 percent effort. Well done to those who were placed and we wish well to those who are to compete at Northern Zones in Term 4! by Jeanie Lyons and Gabrielle Barnett-Bates This term Room 11 have been doing some science experiments. We have done an experiment with milk, a lava lamp, a quick sand experiment and one on surface tension where we made paper clips float. If you put a paper clip in water it will sink but we made them float. First we ripped some tissue paper and put it in the water and then placed the paper clip on top. The tissue paper floated. Now the idea is to get the paper clip to float on the surface – it was quite hard but we did it. You have to carefully remove the tissue paper. The science behind this is that the paper clips are held up by the surface tension of the water. By Kaiquan There has been a lot of work going on at the St Brigid's library over the summer holidays. Walls have been knocked out, doors and decks have been added, and there's even new carpet and new wall coverings.
This week we were very excited to be able to go back into the library. Room 12 have been working hard at putting all the books back in the library. First we had to carry them all across the school back into the library then we had to sort them all out. It's lucky we are good with decimals so the Dewey Decimal System was no problem for us. By Thursday we had most of the books back on the shelves and we are hoping that the rest of the school will be able to come and issue books again next week. It was a lot of hard work, but we felt good when we were finished and very happy that we could help out the rest of the school. The new library looks fantastic!!! |
