Miss Kearns would like to thank all teachers and parents and students who gave well wishes for the Oxfam 100km Trailwalk in Taupo last weekend. I had a fantastic time and my feet are slowly getting back to normal. It was a wonderful experience and a real challenge both physically and mentally. It is such a great cause and people’s generosity was outstanding. Our school contribution towards our Easter Raffle will definitely help all those who are struggling with life at this time. We will be forwarding our school fundraising to our Catholic organisation – Caritas – Remember to buy a raffle ticket!
On Monday 7th April St Brigid’s School Year 4-8 went to Keith Spry Pool to participate in our school swimming sports. We had this event this term because the pool is closing for renovations over the next three terms. There were four events, 1 length freestyle, 1 length backstroke, 1 length breast stroke and 2 lengths freestyle. We had an exhibition event of 1 length butterfly which was amazing to watch! We have such skilful athletes! All participants showed great determination and perseverance. It was fantastic to have such support and encouragement from classmates and parents who were enthusiastically cheering us all on. Thank you to all parents who volunteered and helped us run this successful event. We look forward to the Northern Zone in Term 3.

Throughout this week Team Toru has been learning how to save people. This is our experience. We learned how to · Help someone if they are choking · Tie a sling · How to place someone in the recover position · How to treat a burn · How to treat a bleeding arm · How to help someone with a nose bleed · How to check and help someone if they are unconscious · Get help if someone (or a pet) takes poison – 0800 POISON (0800 764766) One of the most important things we learned was the DRSABC. D is for danger – check for danger before you help. R is for response – shout and tap their shoulder to see if they are unconscious. S is for send for help. Get someone to call 111. A is for airways. Check if they are clear – tilt head and chin lift. B is for breathing. Look, listen and feel. C is for circulation. Think RED – rest & reassure, elevate & expose, direct pressure & dressing. We learned lots today from Lou who helped us. We are hoping not to need to use our new knowledge but at least we are now prepared. On Monday 23rd of March the school gathered to bless our new land called Firmin’s Corner . The land was kindly donated by the Firmans who live next door to the school. Mac and Jack welcomed Mr Firman by chanting Te Waka and then we sang our school song. Father Peter blessed the space. Mrs Tester talked about all the kind things that Mr Firman had done for our school. Firmin’s Corner is a nice big space for us to play on. The next time you see him please say thank you. To keep the grass nice and green, please take care of the area. We have already had some issues with the slope and as you know please stay of it so it has time to grow properly. We are very thankful and we can’t to use this fun and friendly area.
